The hardest thing about maintaining success!
"It's lonely at the top"
"You're only as good as your last sale!"
"What have you done for me lately"
These are all sayings related to being successful, and they all represent a common theme about maintaining success.
When you get there, it's often a whole new ball game to maintain your position.
New expectations are set, and new levels of activity are required to maintain your success.
You see this often in sports.
The great ones often fall from grace harder than those who just had the opportunity to play the sport.
Some of the reasons are because of expectations, but also there are more eyes on you, more people are relying on you to keep on succeeding, and when you don't, the scrutiny is often harsher.
For example its hard for a mother to give birth (physically and emotionally) but it's another thing to raise happy and successful children, and create a home and environment to ensure they live happy lives.
And if you do become successful in the eyes of others and yourself, you often raise the standards of what you expect to do, therefore the required energy to continue and maintain that success as a great mother becomes harder and harder!
Likewise with work, if you're successful and get promoted to a higher paying role with more responsibility and more perks, then more is expected of you. They didn't promote you to do the same job that you were doing previously, and therefore the pressure to perform and maintain increases from the previous role.
So why is it so hard to maintain success once you get successful?
Well I believe that expectations play a massive part and like I mentioned earlier, the pressures of performing whether you're a mother of three or a manager of 30 employees.
BUT you can counter this.
HOW, well I believe there are FOUR key ways you can counter it.
One - Set new goals, not just any goals BUT bigger goals for yourself.
Two - Become aware that the expectations have changed and that your position has changed.
Three - Be prepared to fail and be criticized more.
Four - Accept your new role, and accept that you cannot satisfy everyone!
So to stay at the top be prepared to face harsher critics, because that's the nature of success, you'll have more haters, you'll have people that will never agree with you and its your responsibility to respond positively!
Till next week,
