Disneyland took all my money!
Disneyland in California; no matter what age, I can assure you that this place has something that sparks the inner child in you, simply put, it's a magical place!
BUT sometimes getting to that magical place takes a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifices and not to mention a lot of money, especially if you're travelling all the way from little old New Zealand!
However, with that being said, there was a key lesson a learnt from this trip of a lifetime!
YES, it was expensive, YES it was hard to save and YES it wasn't easy.
BUT when you start with a dream, (literally) and you decide to put it into reality, followed with a set of goals, coupled with the determination to achieve it, you can succeed!
In a nutshell, that's how we were able to do the trip of a lifetime!
We started with a dream of "one-day" going to Disneyland, we would often talk about going in a few years, and every year that went by we were never closer to going, and there was something that would always pop up, an unexpected bill, a car repair, or new uniforms for the kids.
They were all excuses that stopped us from turning that dream into reality, BUT they were excuses that we could work around, BUT we first had to commit to the dream of going!
Commit, in the sense that we were going, we had to remove the"if's", "buts" or "maybe"it was a verbal commitment followed by a physical commitment of planning.
In this case, we decided that we would aim to go in a years time, and then followed that verbal commitment with a physical commitment of researching the best possible options for the trip, such as flights, hotels and amount of time and money required.
By committing to this dream, both verbally and physically it meant we became accountable for that dream.
Once we set the goal, the dates, and the costs of the trip we could then reverse engineer what we needed to do in order to achieve it, mainly in this case it was ensuring we had the money needed to pay for trip.
This is where the next steps of the process was crucial, once we committed to the goals, we had to execute, and I remember social media guru and motivator Gary Vaynerchuck saying once that "ideas suck unless executed".
And that is so true!
So with that being said we had to execute the plan, and within this plan was a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifices and a lot of not having the luxuries we wanted.
We knew this wasn't a cheap trip (from the research we conducted) and we knew what we was required to execute this trip (from reverse engineering we conducted).
And once we were aware of the situation at hand, we became much more self-aware of what this trip really meant for us!
Becoming aware, having goals, having a plan and finally sticking to it, not only helped us reach our goals but made our dreams come true!
In a nutshell, anything is possible, this dream trip to Disneyland seemed to evade us for years and years, but it wasn't until we committed to the dream and really started to set some goals did we start making it reality.
And the reality of this reality is that, you can apply pretty much the same formula of achieving goals and personal success.
This process is not revolutionary by any means, but it is one that often gets overlooked because we initially see a big dream or goal and automatically assume it's out of reach or it's impossible to achieve.
When we do this, we create a habit of doubt, we then feed that doubt and then live in that doubt, and before you know, dreams stay being dreams, goals are forever a goal that never gets achieved and success becomes a club only for the fortunate.
