What’s your legacy goal?
I’ve stated in previous blogs how important goals are to reaching your full potential and overall success.
To quickly summarise, goals are like vehicles that help you get to your destination faster, but more importantly help you get to your key milestones in life more effectively.
I’ve also stated how important understanding your goals are because there’s nothing worse than setting goals with no meaning or purpose, doing something like that is simply a waste of your time and your energy, TRUST ME I'VE BEEN THERE!
So I’ve rambled on about the importance of goals and having important goals that mean something, but I’ve hardly touched on another set of goals. Goals which actually play a bigger role than you think.
These set of goals often get forgotten or are only thought of towards the end of someone’s life.
I call this set of goals, LEGACY GOALS!
They are in principal similar to traditional goals you set each year. The only difference is legacy goals are often non material related or not really something you can easily measure.
Here is the main difference between the two goals. Traditional goals look at something tangible, legacy goals do the opposite and look at things that are intangible.
For example, a traditional goal might be wanting to earn a six figure salary, whereas a legacy goal might look at creating generational wealth.
Another example could look like this, a traditional goal might suggest you want to lose 10kgs by Christmas, but a legacy goal with similar values will be making healthy choices so that you can set the right example for your family by leading a healthy lifestyle.
As I mentioned earlier the principal of each type of goal is similar, they require focus and a specific framework to succeed, but more importantly they both need to mean something to you.
"When you become more aware of what you truly want in your life, having legacy goals helps you stay in the right direction, that is WHY it is so effective"
The easy part when it comes to legacy goals is that it is often focusing on the meaningful aspect straight away, whereas a traditional goal often doesn't focus on the intangibles until the traditional goal gets tested and challenged.
So WHY should you have a legacy goal in the first place, and WHY is it so important?
Simply put, you don't necessarily need legacy goals to succeed, because good "stepping stone' goals such as traditional goals, if done well, will actually have some legacy aspects incorporated into them whether you know it or not.
Why a legacy goal is needed from my experience is it acts like a north point on a compass.
When you become more aware of what you truly want in your life having legacy goals helps you stay in the right direction, that is WHY it is so effective.
When you get busy, when you feel like all traditional goals are failing left, right and centre or when things in your day-to-day life are grinding you down to a point of feeling un-motivated, then that is when a legacy goal really earns its keep!
The legacy goal is that "light at the end of the tunnel" the reason why you keep moving forward when it feels like you are constantly moving backwards, when the world seems to be turning on you and there is no end in sight. A legacy goal allows you to take a step back and refocus, re-adjust and more importantly stay motivated to succeed.
So, legacy goals, should you have them?
My answer is YES of course you should, who wouldn't want an internal north compass you could refer to in your everyday journey to success.
